Happy Independence Day 2017

July 3, 2017

I have been having a marvelous summer.

The very necessary home renovations that I postponed until the summer are almost completely finished. Only one more coat of paint needed on my new back door.

The three hours per week during which I am tutoring one nephew in English is running smoothly despite his work schedule, physical therapy, basketball practice, and numerous vacations. On some weeks, we meet at odd times to make it happen. But happening it is, and what’s more is that my nephew is eager for the tutoring as he sees the value in it.

It is always fine to teach someone who values the experience.

Also this summer, I have been enjoying reading numerous works of British literature in preparation for teaching English IV for the first time since I student taught it in 1991.

Too, I have been able to take some short trips. Just as the school year ended, I traveled to Georgia to attend the high school graduation of the daughter of a childhood friend. Last weekend, I traveled to Baton Rouge to hear bible teacher, Beth Moore, who is easily one of the top three funniest people I have ever encountered.  This week, I will head to Tennessee to visit a college roommate who can be a festival of goofiness in her own right. 🙂

I have also been engaged in a spring cleaning of sorts, pacing myself such that I spend only 15 minutes to an hour on a task, usually each day.

I have been blogging a few times a week, but no major writing or research projects this summer.

On many evenings, I sit outside in a favorite busy place as the sun sets, reading, people-watching, and enjoying coffee and a snack.

I go to the gym and to the pool almost every day.

On July 4th, I will spend the day with some of my siblings and numerous nieces and nephews, and my mother, if we can lure her out of the house. One of my brothers is a commercial fisherman, and we will be lounging on one of his boats, with those who wish also going tubing and riding a jet ski.

I will turn 50 in exactly one month. I am healthy, and some agreeable changes in diet several months ago have me weighing what I did in my mid-30s.

I am content and wish my readers the same.

Happy Independence Day to all. 🙂

Enjoy. In a month you can say: “I am this side of fifty.” Let those who wonder guess which side. Looking 30 at the big 50 is no small feat. Keep on and enjoy the 4th with kith and kin.

Can’t think of anyone who deserves a marvelous, relaxing summer more than you, Mercedes! Thank you for your breakneck pace of teaching, researching, writing and posting.

Breathe deep, smile wide, laugh often!
